Sami Schinaia is a young italian film director, known in the advertising industry for shooting successfull international campaign since 2009. In 2021 Sami directed his first solo work, NOPE! After ten years as part of the directing duo SÄMEN. This short film was born out of the need to explore and share the director’s most recent and intimate period of his life, during which he has explored the world of psychedelics and internet dating.

“We went minimal

to pay a tribute to

analog photography.”

We have chosen to go minimal to pay a tribute to analog photography, one of Sami's passions. The work previews are framed by geometric lines and clear backgrounds, so that they can sparkle with all their colors. The titles, that are just outlines, become active elements thanks to the invert-colors effect that makes them change following the images colors.

"To build this project

we used the

Jam Session Approach”

To build this project we used the “Jam Session Approach”: we were led by lucky insights and many daring attempts. The idea of showing the works preview with an horizontal scroll for example, was one of these sudden intuitions. This is a simple trick that keeps users, that are used to scroll vertically all the time, more engaged.

Something about NOPE!

The short film is a reflection on our society, as it looks at our relationship with drugs and the internet and the way these forms of addiction tend to dilute the value we place on human interactions. However, Nope! isn’t a criticism generally associated with these themes, but rather an ironic, light and playful insight into today’s youth culture.

The new generation of dreamers and creators is represented as fluorescent, digital and slightly foggy. Working exclusively with a very young team, across styling, music, cinematography, post-production, sound design, graphic design and illustration Nope! becomes a tribute to the fresh and innovative creative talent of tomorrow.
